The Fuggerei was built almost 500 years ago by Jakob Fugger dem Reichen - "the rich one".  The area has always been separated from the surroundings by a wall, and today the gates close at 22.00. The Fuggerei is the oldest existing social housing complex in the world, a city within a city with 67 buildings and 142 residences as well as a church.
