Wallerstein  was first mentioned 1238 as Steinheim. For generations ruled by the House of Oettingen-Wallerstein , in 1806 Wallerstein became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria by the process of mediatisation .

Since the 17th century, the residence served as the seat of government of the Principality of Oettingen-Wallerstein. Today Schloss Wallerstein is a private family residence of the Princely House and therefore can not be visited regularly. On request, the castle can be rented for special tours or private events
